PE
Vision
To create active and healthy children who develop a love of physical activities, whether that is competitive, creative or recreational. Provide children will high quality physical education that takes into account the needs and abilities of all children.
How we teach P.E at St. John’s
At St. John’s Physical education is the planned, progressive learning that takes place within the school curriculum timetabled time and is delivered to all children. All children are able to access P.E at their level and we aim to inspire children to lead active and healthy lifestyles. We follow the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum, alongside the planning tool ‘Complete P.E’ to ensure progression of skills from Reception up to Year 6.
The children in Nursery and Reception have a weekly PE session and daily opportunities to develop their fine and gross motor skills. Through daily child initiated learning children will have opportunities to ride bikes, climb, balance, move to music and develop basic ball skills daily. This lays the physical foundations for our youngest children, which they will continue to develop through more formal sessions in Key Stage 1.
In Key Stage 1, weekly P.E lessons are delivered by class teachers and specialist sports coaches. Key Stage One are taught to:
- Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
- Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
- Perform dances using simple movement.
Pupils’ are provided with opportunities for active play and lunchtimes every, including the ‘Daily Mile’ track, lunchtime resources to support collaborative and team games, as well as simple gym equipment. We realise the importance of exercise throughout the day and promote daily boogies and mindfulness. Children are encouraged to talk about how exercise makes their body feel and why this happens.
High quality after-school clubs are provided which many of our children attend.
