Geography

Our Vision

At St. John’s our aim is to inspire children’s curiosity and interest in order to explore our world and its people. This aims to ignite a love of learning so that they know more, remember more and understand more. We want to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes, through investigating places familiar to them, areas within the UK and the wider world. At St John’s, we provide children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area so that they can develop a real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special. We seek to enable children to apply geographical skills confidently and, to communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences.

How we teach Geography at St John’s

‘The aim of our geography curriculum is to inspire children’s curiosity and interest.

At St John’s, we follow the Early Years Framework and National Curriculum. We have developed our own progressions of skills which carefully plans for progression and depth, concentrating on the geographical skills suited to the age group. In EYFS Geography the Geography curriculum fits under the umbrella of ‘Understanding of The World’ and is taught through child-initiated learning. Across all the year groups there is a focus upon building the children’s:

  1. Locational Knowledge
  2. Understanding of Physical and Human Geography
  3. Place Knowledge
  4. Geographical skills and Field Work

We strive to develop independent learners, and children are encouraged to enquire about their topic of interest and develop their independence when locating places, describing places, and exploring the outdoors. Children at St John’s are provided with an opportunity to explore and become more aware of their local environment as they progress through their geographical education and use a map specific for their areas of enquiry. As part of the Geography Curriculum, we provide engaging and well thought out activity days linked to the areas being covered.
