Vision

Music is a chance for children to develop their creativity and teamwork and above all have some fun! It gives children the chance to work collaboratively and enjoy creating something together. This could be through singing songs together or composing using instruments. Music allows children to explore and create without right or wrong answers and build their confidence.

How we teach Music at St John’s

At St John’s, we give children the opportunity to sing and make music together. As well as music lessons taking place as part of our curriculum, music is a part of school life. Children take part in singing worships every week. The children learn a range of songs and singing games. Each year group has the opportunity to take part in a school show to develop their performance skills and take pride in the music they make together.  Key Stage 1 also have the opportunity to take part in choir where they can enjoy singing together and having fun.

We follow the Early Years Framework and National Curriculum, alongside the planning tool ‘Charanga’ which is full of fun songs and activities for the children to participate in. From the beginning of their learning journey, the children are given the opportunity to experiment with different instruments and creating music. Children develop key skills such as listening and responding to a wide range of music from different cultures, learning songs, composing and performing. Children learn the key skills relating to music:

-pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure.

Music is enjoyed and celebrated as part of our everyday life at St John’s.
